So soon enough my little 124 will be ready for paint, and I’ve been trying to decide colors. It’s getting the full Abarth treatment but I don’t like red (the only color the real Abarth was ever sold in). This first pictures the original color code for my car, which I really like and have considered going back to. The second picture is the color the previous owner painted it. The 3rd is of the new 124 Prima which they only made 124 of and this color is only being offered on these 124 examples. I have been thinking of painting mine that blue and then later sourcing one of these Prima editions off the used market to have an old and a new in the same color.

Original color code is a semi-metallic? It’s a good color, but as the second pic demonstrates, there’s a lot to be said for a 124 in non-metallic, whatever the shade. Is the new color an almost-match for the original, but slightly brighter and slightly less metallic? That might make it a good choice.

Not that green! Ugh...

Both blues are nice, I prefer the newer one but there’s something to be said for having the original colour.

Decision: If you’re really serious about getting a new one to match, go with that colour. Otherwise, original.

What do you mean you don’t like red on a Fiat? Da fuq?

What color are the guts of your car? Regardless though, I say no to the grass green. That does nothing for the car, IMHO. It's a real toss up between the Original color and the color of the 124 Prima. Those are both fantastic colors.

Right! They are close too and both are fairly rare colors from the factory.

Ehh. Im okay with white, but if all goes as planned, I will be acquiring a new Mercedes that will be white, and I like to mix things up a bit and not have an all one color fleet.

Nardo gray with a sky blue stripe running on the side, from the front quarter turn signal to the rear lights :)

Blu Isola d’Elba! Though you probably won’t be able to match it later on, since I don’t think it’s available on US Abarths?

I really love that original color on a 124, but getting that new blue is an excellent idea. Tough choice, but I don’t think you can go wrong with either. I’ve always liked them in sky blue, too.

Kinja'd!!!

And this original dark blue also looks sharp.

I’d go with that original color, it’s just not a shade of color you see a lot of. Plus, at least in that photo it just brings the lines of the car out so well. I suppose the blue metallic would as well though.

I’m generally a fan of bright nonmetallic paint but I’m not sure it works as well here, certainly not as well as the original color. I’ve seen dark green 124s that were gorgeous though

That said, yellow 124s are best 124s

Kinja'd!!!

I’m still salty about the lack of color options for the new 124. No bright, happy colors that I tend to associate with the 124. Might just be me though.

I’m not into red either, glad we can agree on that. It’s just too loud. Maroon is as close as I can get. I’d go for the blue over the green, or maybe go for a lighter green for that vintage feel - the green you posted doesn’t really have much character IMO. Looks like a primary color that comes out of a paint tube.

I decided to stick with the factory color on mine; which happened to be this quite lovely blue:

http://oppositelock.kinja.com/project-wannab…

So uh... stay away from paint code 462... there can be only 1! I think a reverse of the Abarth would be nice too— black body with red hood and trunk.

What are you planning on doing in the “Abartharization” process? I’m still debating how to proceed with my project. I think if the motor is seeping oil and needs a rebuild I’ll do a full rebuild on it and throw in the Abarth 9.8:1 pistons, versus the gutless 8.1:1 ratio pistons they came with in the late 70s here in the states. If the motor seems solid, I’ll probably go with a low-pressure turbo setup instead— much easier. I’m planning on making molded CF hood and trunk replacements. Not sure if I’ll do anything for the widebody setup...

Either way, I’ll skip converting the rear suspension to an IRS— a watt’s linkage instead of the panhard rod would be a nice touch though.

I still need to check compression / leak down, if the block is good I will leave the bottom end, if not, I plan to go to the Abarth pistons as well. Head will be decked, ported, cammed, supporting updates where I can find them, Abarth style 4-2-1 header, Dual webber 40 IDF’s.

Very nice. I’ve heard good things about going with a Stage 2 intake cam and stage 1 exhaust cam for a street car. My engine was rated for about 90HP from the factory with the 1800, but I’d like to get up around 140+HP. I would think it’d be pretty tough to get there with the 8.1:1 pistons.... what are you expecting to top out at?

In the meantime, I think I’ve traced the no-start condition problems I’m having to a bad terminal on the ignition cylinder; the wiring on these cars is the worst rat’s nest I’ve ever had to deal with in a car... but at least I’m back to having a clear path forward :)

I would be happy at 150. My wiring is horrible too. Since Im doing a full tear down I’m pulling all the wiring and installing all new stuff.

Yeah, if mine doesn’t spring to life with a couple minor fixes to the wiring, I’ll be doing the same this upcoming winter. Best to save some tasks for when I can’t drive it... for now I just want to get her up and running again.

Also, I want to say that the special color for the new 124s was supposed to be an homage to one of their older blues— probably the one your car was specc’d with.
